CLOTHING

On-site storage is very limited so we can only accept seasonal (new or gently-used) clothes. Out of season clothes and items not on this list can be taken to the Fort Walton Beach Goodwill Center. If you tell them you would like Opportunity Place to receive credit for the donation we will receive Goodwill vouchers for shelter residents.

FURNITURE & LARGE ITEMS

When families leave the shelter, we like to provide basic furniture (table/chairs, beds, dressers, living-room furniture). Funds:

Funds pay for the hot water used to bathe and do laundry, electricity to keep the lights on so a child is not scared, security systems to keep families safe, case management to help families improve their financial security and housing stability and assistance connecting to community resources. Donations make it possible for Opportunity Place to keep families together in a safe shelter while they rebuild their lives. Please Donate Online Now!

Volunteers/Interns:

Opportunity Place relies on Volunteers and Interns to provide services for the clients and keep the shelter operating. We are always on the lookout for individuals and groups not afraid to roll up their sleeves to help other. The shelter only has four employees, so help is always needed. We take a "skills-based" approach when working with volunteers. In other words, we like to match your skills / interest to specific tasks / needs at the shelter. For example, if you have skills or an interest in one of the following areas your placement might be:

Administrative / Clerical: Clerical tasks, tracking volunteer hours, writing thank you letters, answering phones, filing, light bookkeeping

Social Work: Working with clients / families, responding to inquiries from callers in need of help; resource development

Maintenance / Repair: Great for groups interested in "team building," grounds maintenance, painting, light repairs

Activities / Arts: Group activities with children / families, art projects, holiday parties

Logistics: Organizing pantry, storage unit / shed, Community Food Distribution program (Weds)

Client Assistance: Mentoring, budgeting, resume writing, job application, transport to appointments

Marketing / Social Media / Writers: Design or distribute marketing materials, post on social media write articles, newsletters, e-blasts, letters, e-blasts, grants
