Make a Difference Today as a Volunteer

Opportunity Place relies on Volunteers and Interns to provide services for the clients and keep the shelter operating. We are always on the lookout for individuals and groups not afraid to roll up their sleeves to help other. The shelter only has four employees, so help is always appreciated. We take a "skills-based" approach when working with volunteers. In other words, we like to match your skills / interest to specific tasks / needs at the shelter. For example, if you have skills or an interest in one of the following areas your placement might be:

Skill/Interest

Administrative / Clerical: Clerical tasks, tracking volunteer hours, writing thank you letters, answering phones, filing, light bookkeeping

Social Work: Working with clients / families, responding to inquiries from callers in need of help; resource development

Maintenance / Repair: Great for groups interested in "team building," grounds maintenance, painting, light repairs

Activities / Arts: Group activities with children / families, art projects, holiday parties

Logistics: Organizing pantry, storage unit / shed, Community Food Distribution program (Weds)

Featured Volunteers

Special Operations Youth (SOY)
The Special Operations Youth from the Hurlburt Chapel donated their time as a mission project to give Opportunity Place a "facelift". They spent four days painting, power washing and doing yard work, cleaning up the front of the building. Some of the youth were local, from Fort Walton Beach, Navarre and Pensacola along with others from as far away as Maine.

Terrin Matthews...The Queen of Order
Food and items donated to Opportunity Place, Inc are used at the shelter and given to the clients. In addition, OPI offers support to the community through a food distribution program. Every week, food is donated by Destin Harvest and food drives sponsored by local organizations and individuals. Terri organizes everything and makes the determination of what items can best be used at the shelter for clients and what is available for distribution. The pantry has never looked better nor food distribution program run smoother thanks to Terri.
